Renowned architect Richard Neutra designed and built the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences (1932-1965) as both his family home and architecture office located on the shore of the Silver Lake reservoir in Los Angeles. Today, the VDL remains a source of inspiration as a community venue for art, architecture, and education. The Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, owns the property, and it is managed by the College of Environmental Design. The primary purpose of the VDL is to serve as an educational resource for ENV students and faculty while preserving and maintaining the property. Cal Poly Pomona architecture students provide tours of the house to visitors, and arts and culture programs are held to enhance the facility's mission as a community resource. The VDL is dedicated to creating a welcoming and respectful learning and working environment free of barriers.

Why were Louis Poulsen products chosen for the space?

Louis Poulsen's pieces feel at home at the VDL House. Together with the House, they create a warmness not typically associated with modernist design.

What does 'good lighting' mean to you and how do you achieve it?

Good lighting is designed to contribute to a sense of place. It doesn't overpower or disappear but creates harmony with its surroundings using light, material, and form.

Where do you find design inspiration?

We find design inspiration in architecture, art, design cultures, and histories. We're thankful to those who came before us and who have given us a wealth of inspiring material to draw from.
