Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi, co-founders of GamFratesi and one of the most recognizable design duo of our time, inherited Louis Poulsen's design philosophy of embodying light and inspired by Danish design traditions to design a lamp named Yuh.
Drawing on his deep knowledge of design history and inspired by Poul Henningsen's philosophy of light, GamFratesi designed the Yuh lamp, which incorporates Arne Jacobsen's geometric shapes to inherit the spirit of these masters while adding a unique aesthetic delight.
"We were deeply inspired by Arne Jacobsen's design for the AJ lamp. It is a design that boasts a very strong geometric appeal. Although angular, part of the shade is designed to always be parallel to the floor. It's extremely sculptural and also very geometric." – Stine Gam
"It is a work of architecture." – Enrico Fratesi
In response to a question about the collaboration, Rasmus Markholt, Louis Poulsen's Director of Ideas and Design, says: "Collaborating with GamFratesi was a no-brainer for me. They share values rooted in a strong contemporary aesthetic and Danish design tradition, making them the right partner for the creative partnership we are pursuing."
Personal Light
One of the key features of this lamp is that it is a personal lamp. It is a flexible lamp and does not take up much space. It can be rotated and height-adjusted, creating a great lighting atmosphere in the space where you need it. It is a lamp that illuminates the user's surroundings.
"The biggest challenge was designing a lamp that could move in multiple directions. It is possible to adjust three movements based on the axis: tilt, rotation and height. This was a very complex process. It was a huge challenge, but we worked closely with Louis Poulsen's team of highly qualified engineers to solve it." - Enrico Fratesi
The lamp provides glare-free downward direct illumination. The angle of the shade can be adjusted to optimize the light distribution. A slim opening at the top of the shade provides soft upward luminescence.
"The reason we wanted to incorporate the diffuser in the lamp stem is not only because we focused on indirect light, but also because we pay homage to the work of Poul Henningsen. We wanted the light to be invisible and not glare. By hiding the light source through a diffuser, we were able to create a magical light." - Stine Gam
Louis Poulsen debuted GamFratesi's original stand design at this year's Euroluce lighting exhibition in Milan. With architectural structures inspired by Japanese origami, GamFratesi wanted to create an original space that invites visitors to the exhibition to think about how incisions, lines, and shapes affect light and create atmosphere.
Yuh has been on the market since September 2017 and consists of table lamps, floor lamps, and wall lamps, all of which come in white or black.
