In the spring of 2021, Louis Poulsen will present the Flindt Plaza, a new post-top that looks like a sculpture by Christian Flindt that combines design flexibility with a modern aesthetic. With a modular build-up that adapts to the surrounding environment, the Flint Plaza is ideal for large-scale, elegant lighting installations for public spaces and futuristic landscapes.
The Flindt Plaza is an addition to the Flindt family, developed by award-winning Danish designer and architect Christian Flindt in collaboration with Louis Poulsen. Flindt Plaza not only blends in with the landscape in a variety of places, including public parks, city squares, city centers, and forestry areas, but also offers large-scale lighting that is calm yet bright. This beautiful design, like the rest of the Flindt range, has the form of delicate sculptures and complements both modern and classic urban spaces.
"Flindt Plaza is an inclusive and atmospheric lighting entirely for the outdoor environment, not only with enough lighting to be safe or to walk around and identify objects, but also attractive enough to create an atmosphere that invites people to enjoy the outdoors and be sociable. This role is more important than ever for urban spaces and urban planning." says Kasper Hammer, Director of Product & Design - Architectural & Outdoor at Louis Poulsen.
A single asymmetrical piece based on the same design language and core idea as the Flindt family shines through. The unique sculpting gives the luminaire personality and acts as a reflector, softening the light, illuminating dark areas more pleasantly, and delivering light exactly where it is needed.
The idea for the sculptural design was born in 2011 when the Danish Kunsthal Brænderigården (now Viborg Kunsthal) in Jutland needed a more sophisticated type of bollard to illuminate the park next to the exhibition hall. The luminaire was so well received that Louis Poulsen decided to take it further in partnership with Christian Flindt. These bollards have improved material quality, light distribution and efficiency, and were introduced as Flindt Bollard at the Lighting + Architecture Fair in Frankfurt in 2014.
Combining the simple aesthetic of bouncy bollards with functional, attractive lighting, Flindt Bollard is an excellent choice for elegantly decorating city parks and other public spaces during the day and making them safer and more accessible at night.
Building on the success of the Flindt bollards, the Flindt Plaza makes the Flindt family available when large-scale aesthetic lighting from higher positions is required. To enhance the flexibility of the lighting design, the lighting unit can be adjusted vertically in the field +/- 5° and 360° horizontally, allowing for a wider variety of light distribution.
"With Flindt Plaza, we create a lighting unit to illuminate the light that creates atmospheric lighting. When the final commission day comes, we can still adjust the module and change the angle of the beam." Kasper Hammer says.
The Flindt Plaza is based on a modular principle and is designed to accommodate up to four highly flexible light heads on a pole in some configurations.
"You also need to be flexible in creating a fancy light for your surroundings. It was important to work with lighting designers, specifiers, architects, and planners to create a modular system that could be used in the design process to convince them that these environments were attractive to humans." Kasper Hammer says.
These luminaires irradiate low beam. The light source is hidden at the top of the asymmetrical sculpture inside the side of the post-top, and the slope acts as a reflector shade that softens the light and forms an attractive organic shape.
The Flindt Plaza is available in warm corten or aluminium with a surface texture. Textured finishes allow for improved visibility and elegant reflections in both sunlight and artificial light, as well as ensuring durability in all different environments in which they are used.
The Flindt Plaza post-top will be available in spring 2021.

Flindt graduated from the Aarhus School of Architecture in 2002 with an MAA and MDD degree and opened his own design studio in 2003. He has worked with Louis Poulsen since 2006, developing the Flint 220 Floor Lamp, the Flint 220 Pendant, the Flint 475 Pendant, the Flint Bollard, the LP Grand Pendant, and the Flint Wall. His works using LED design have repeatedly demonstrated his ability to link discrete disciplines such as lighting design and furniture design. Flindt has received numerous design awards, including the Bolig Magasinet Design Award for several flint designs for Louis Poulsen and the 2014 ELFORSK Prize from the Danish Energy Authority for his flint bollards.
