In spring 2021, Louis Poulsen will be introducing Flindt Plaza, a new sculptural post top by Christian Flindt that merges design flexibility and contemporary aesthetics. With its modular build-up that can be adjusted to the surrounding environment, the Flindt Plaza is ideal for creating scenic and larger- scale illumination for the public realms and landscapes of tomorrow.
The Flindt Plaza is an addition to the Flindt family, developed by award-winning Danish designer and architect Christian Flindt in collaboration with Louis Poulsen. The Flindt Plaza meets the need for scenic and flexible, as well as discreet, larger-scale illumination in a range of applications from public parks, urban squares, city centres and ocean fronts. The aesthetic design has the same subtle sculptural appearance as the rest of the Flindt family, complementing both modern and classic urban spaces.
“The Flindt Plaza is all about creating an inclusive and scenic lighting of an environment, not just for safety or having enough lighting to be able to walk around and see objects, but for creating a scene that is attractive and invites people to play and be social outdoors. This is more important than ever for urban spaces and urban planning,” says Kasper Hammer, Director, Product & Design – Architectural & Outdoor at Louis Poulsen.
Based on the same design language and key idea of the Flindt family, one single asymmetric carving opens up the light. This distinctive carving adds character to the luminaire and serves as a dimming reflector, softening the light and making it more pleasant in the dark, while also directing it precisely where needed.
The idea for the sculptural design was born in 2011, when a more refined type of bollard was required to illuminate a park next to an exhibition at the Danish Kunsthal Brænderigården exhibition space in Jutland, today known as Viborg Kunsthal. The light fixture was so well received that Louis Poulsen decided to develop it further, in partnership with Christian Flindt. The bollard was enhanced in terms of material quality, light distribution and efficiency and was introduced as the Flindt Bollard at the Light + Building trade fair in Frankfurt in 2014.
The simple aesthetics of this resilient bollard, with its functional and attractive illumination, has since made the Flindt Bollard a convincing choice – elegantly complementing urban parks and other public spaces during the day as well as making them more accessible and safer at night.
Building on the success of Flindt Bollard, the Flindt Plaza is an additional step in using the Flindt family in spaces where greater height, scale and aesthetic illumination are required. To enhance the flexibility in the lighting design, the light units are adjustable by plus/minus 5° vertically and 360° horizontally on site, allowing for more varied light distribution.
“With the Flindt Plaza we construct units and direct the light to create scenic lighting. When the day of final commission comes, the modules can still be adjusted and the angle of the light beam changed,” says Kasper Hammer.
The Flindt Plaza is also based on a modular principle and can in some configurations be designed to allow four highly flexible light heads on one pole.
“Creating scenic lighting of an environment is also about ensuring flexibility. Creating a modular system that could be used in the design process with lighting designers, specifiers, architects and planners was important in order to ensure that these environments are attractive for human beings,” says Kasper Hammer.
The fixture emits a downward directed light. The light source is hidden at the top, inside the asymmetric carving on the side of the post top where the gradient serves as a reflector that softens the light and forms an attractive organic shape.
The Flindt Plaza comes in a warm corten or aluminium with a textured surface. The textured finish not only allows enhanced visibility and elegant reflection – both in sunlight and artificial lighting – but ensures its durability in all the different environments in which it is used.
The Flindt Plaza post top will be available in spring 2021.

Flindt graduated with an MAA and MDD from the Aarhus School of Architecture in 2002, and opened his own design studio in 2003. He began working with Louis Poulsen in 2006, developing the Flindt 220 floor lamp, the Flindt 220 pendant, the Flindt 475 pendant, the Flindt Bollard, the LP Grand pendant, and the Flindt Wall. His work with LED design has repeatedly highlighted his ability to connect disparate fields such as lighting and furniture design. Flindt has won numerous awards for his designs, including the Bolig Magasinet Design Award for his Flindt range for Louis Poulsen and the 2014 ELFORSK Prize from Danish Energy for the Flindt Bollard.
