Poul Henningsen progettò le sue prime lampade nel 1925-1926 per una mostra a Parigi. Il suo lavoro con Louis Poulsen proseguì fino alla sua morte, nel 1967. Nel corso della sua vita, Poul Henningsen ha cercato di realizzare un’illuminazione anabbagliante e diretta, nelle aree essenziali, creando ombre morbide con lampadine a incandescenza come sorgente di luce. Poul Henningsen progettò la Snowball nel 1958; la lampada fu esposta insieme alla PH 5 al Museo di arti decorative danese. Tuttavia, la Snowball non ricevete una particolare attenzione al suo lancio e fu ridisegnata e reintrodotta sul mercato nel 1983.
