For hospital patients, a link to the outside world can feel as important as the care that's taking place inside.
That’s why the lighting design team for Japan’s Fukuoka Sanno Hospital knew they needed to pay close attention to the outdoor lighting around the hospital's entrance. For many, this is the first impression of the hospital, and the outdoor space is valued by both patients and visitors.
With its views over Hakata Bay, the feeling of connection to the outside world is a key benefit of the hospital, which opened in 2009 and has 200 private rooms.
Miki Matsushita Lighting Design, which designed the hospital’s lighting, chose Louis Poulsen’s Waterfront illuminated bollards for the area around the entrance, which features decorative trees and a covered walkway. Approximately 15 Waterfront units are arranged in a row at the perimeter of the pedestrian area, guiding people safely and comfortably, while giving the space definition and character after dark.
With its durability, glare-free downward lighting, and simple, elegant form, Waterfront is an ideal solution on both a practical and aesthetic level.
