One of the most popular contemporary duos, Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi (the founders of GamFratesi), have teamed up to create a luminaire called Yuh inspired by Louis Poulsen's philosophy of "design shapes light".
With a deep understanding of design history, GamFratesi draws inspiration from Poul Henningsen's lighting concept and Arne Jacobsen's geometric style to pay homage to many legends while adding its own unique aesthetic to the new Yuh lamp.
"We were inspired by the AJ wall lamp designed by designer Arne Jacobsen. The geometry of the luminaire is unique. Although it is angled, the lampshade is cleverly designed and there is always a part of it that aligns with the floor in some way. It resembles a sculpture and has a strong sense of geometry. Stine Gam said.
"It's just a building." Enrico Fratesi added.
When asked about the collaboration, Rasmus Marcholt, Creative and Design Director at Louis Poulsen, said: "Working with GamFratesi was a no-brainer for me. They have a contemporary aesthetic and share our values from the Danish design tradition, making them ideal creative partners. ”
Personal lighting
One of the essential features of this luminaire is its individuality. It is very flexible and takes up very little space; It can also be rotated, raised, and lowered to illuminate the desired area and create an atmosphere, creating a light around the user.
"Our biggest challenge was to design the lights to move in several directions. There are three different types of movement on the axis: tilt, turn, and lift, which makes the design extremely complex. Although it was a huge challenge, Louis Poulsen had a great team of engineers and worked well with us. Enrico Fratesi said.
The luminaire's direct light is downwards and glare-free. The angle of the lampshade can be adjusted to optimize the light distribution. The elongated opening at the top of the shade provides soft up-firing ambient lighting.
"The inclusion of diffusers in the lamp is both a nod to Poul Henningsen's work and our love of indirect light. We want you not to see the light source and not feel dizzy. Using a diffuser to hide the light source, we think this brings magic to the lighting. Stine Gam said.
Louis Poulsen's new collaboration debuted at this year's Milano International Light Fair, with GamFratesi designing an unconventional stand. GamFratesi's architectural structure was inspired by Japanese paper art, and they sought to create a space that would allow visitors to think outside the box, asking visitors to think about how cuts, lines, and shapes can affect light and create atmosphere.
Yuh has been on sale since September 2017 and includes table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps, all available in black and white.

About GamFratesi
GamFratesi's design ideas are born from a fusion of tradition and innovation, which is reflected in their experimental approach to the use of materials and technologies of their choice. Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi have their own traditions, drawing on classic Danish furniture design styles and craftsmanship, as well as classic Italian ideas and methods. By understanding the tradition and actively applying it, we can build on it. On top of this cross-cultural heritage, their designs respect and reflect tradition, while also containing unique plots, symbols, and associations, often expressed in a minimalist form.
GamFratesi was founded in 2006 by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi. They met in 2004 at the Department of Architecture at the University of Ferrara in northern Italy, and have since studied together at the Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. GamFratesi has a studio in Copenhagen.
