Louis Poulsen has a long history of shaping the design of light, and his collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen, a trailblazing figure of Danish functionalism, is a story in the history of design. This important partnership further confirms that working with creative minds is a crucial and integral part of Louis Poulsen's evolution.
Louis Poulsen unveiled a new addition to the Vilhelm Lauritzen collection at Euroluce in Milan earlier this spring, originally designed for the Radio House in Copenhagen in the late 20s of the 30th century. The collection now includes the classic VL45 Radiohus pendant lamp and VL38 table lamp made of hand-blown glass, white/brass coloured floor lamps and wall lamps and a new black/brass version.
Vilhelm Lauritzen is a master of the art of combining materials with light. Back in the 20s of the 20th century, he began to delve into daylight. Throughout his career, Lauritzen has devoted himself to developing and improving his luminaires so that they blend harmoniously with the buildings he designs.
"The VL38 features a typical lampshade from Vilhelm Lauritzen and demonstrates its innovative vision in the field of lighting design. The natural blend of white and brass creates an elegant and beautiful look with a timeless design. The new black version adds a touch of rigor and modernity to the design, creating contrasts and dark accents in the space without compromising the shape of the light. Rasmus Marcholt, Creative and Design Director at Louis Poulsen, explains.
The lamp arm is made of brass and the inside of the lampshade is painted white to ensure a soft and comfortable light. The luminaire offers two levels of brightness, emitting directional light downward, and the angle of the shade can be adjusted to optimize light distribution. In line with the development of contemporary lighting technology and energy efficiency, these luminaires are fitted with LED bulbs.
The VL38 black and brass table, wall and floor lamps will be available in stores from September 2017.

About Vilhelm Lauritzen
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984) was one of the most important architects in the history of Danish architecture and a pioneer of Danish functionalism.
Throughout his life, Vilhelm Lauritzen followed the principle that "architecture is an applied art", insisting that "art" and "application" are equally important. "The meaning of life is beauty" is another belief that Vilhelm Lauritzen has always adhered to. Vilhelm Lauritzen works with both daylight and artificial light. He consistently incorporated daylight into his architectural projects, subtly mixing warm sunlight with the cool light that flows into the sky inside the building through the north- and east-facing windows by setting up large south- and west-facing windows. This method shifts the focus away from the limited wall surface of the room itself. People, furniture, and accessories flicker in sculptural light. Lauritzen's luminaires follow the same philosophy. The design combines powerful directional light, which creates sharp shadows, with softer, diffused light to create a soft light and shadow effect for the room.
The first lamps designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen for the Radio House in Copenhagen began to appear in Louis Poulsen's catalogue in the mid-20s of the 40th century. In the 20s of the 50th century, as its major construction projects progressed, the Lauritzen collection was constantly expanded, encompassing a wide and varied range of accessories.
