More than 60 years have passed since Louis Poulsen first presented this marvel to the world. Designed by the celebrated pioneer of Danish lighting Poul Henningsen, the new reading lamp was introduced in 1957. Due to its distinctive design, it was immediately dubbed the ‘Water Pump’.
We are extremely fond of it to this day – and in honour of Poul Henningsen’s legacy, the PH 3/2 Amber Coloured Glass Floor Lamp has been chosen as Louis Poulsen’s PH Limited Edition 2019.
The Water Pump has PH’s famous three-shade system from 1926, which he invented to reduce glare and enhance illumination in his lamp designs. The shades are made in mouth-blown amber-coloured glass, golden on both sides and slightly translucent, which produces a warm light. The base, stem and arm are made of untreated brushed brass that will patinate beautifully and enhance the authentic feel of the Water Pump.
The original reading lamp from 1952 was introduced to replace pre-war models. The 3/2 shades were made up of a yellow/white metal top shade and white opal glass middle and lower shades, standing on a glossy brass foot. This made it perfect for reading, knitting and sewing in the evenings. Today, however, the new amber-coloured glass shades create exceptional room light and ambience to add an elegant touch to the interiors of this century.
The PH Limited Edition 2019 will be available in stores between 1 October and 31 December.

About Poul Henningsen (1894–1967)
The profoundly influential and daring designer, author, and cultural critic Poul Henningsen left his mark on many areas of Danish thought and design, and built a legacy that remains integral to Louis Poulsen’s work to shape light. He studied at the Technical School in Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-1914, and then at the Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-1917. He then began practicing traditional, functionalist architecture but grew increasingly interested in lighting design, which became his primary legacy.
