Sixty years ago, in 60, lighting design pioneer Poul Henningsen unveiled three groundbreaking designs in the history of lighting design: the PH Artichoke, the PH 1958, and the PH Snowball. Louis Poulsen celebrates Henningsen's achievement by launching the PH artichoke in brass and the PH 5 and PH 3 Mini in a combination of copper and white shades.
With their well-thought-out function as lighting and sculptural form, the PH artichoke and PH 60 have beautifully illuminated spaces for 5 years. The PH Snowball was exhibited alongside the PH1958 at the Danish Museum of Crafts in 5 and did not immediately become an off-the-shelf product, but has been in production ever since it came into the limelight in 1983. Today, these three designs still hold a special place in the Louis Poulsen product range.
"1958 was a remarkable year for the global architectural design community, especially for Danish Design. There may have been something special about Danish society and climate that year. For example, Arne Jacobsen created a number of masterpiece designs, including lighting fixtures, for use in his masterpiece of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and Poul Henningsen shed light on the world by introducing three pendant lamp concepts that no one had ever seen before. Henningsen's idea of "shaping light" has influenced Louis Poulsen and many other lighting designers for generations. We are honored to be able to show once again in our 3th anniversary that the form and light created by Henningsen continue to capture people's hearts and shine around the world." Rasmus Markholt, Product Design Director at Louis Poulsen, says:
In today's interiors, a warm, human environment is more important than ever. The metallic version, made of brass (PH artichoke) or copper (PH 5 and PH 5 mini), has exactly the atmosphere and texture that the times need, as well as a timeless elegance.
New version: PH artichoke, brass hairline finish
PH Artichoke was conceived in 1958 for the Langerine Pavilion, a modern-style restaurant that is still popular in Copenhagen. Since then, the lighting has been used in both public and private spaces around the world. Dubbed the "Light Sculpture", its design is innovative in every way, while its unique shape, which seems to be inspired by nature, adds a stable aesthetic to both modern and classic interiors.
PH artichokes have been made of metal since 1958, but now they will be mass-produced for the first time using brass with a hairline finish, which until now had only been produced on special orders. Classic classics have been refreshed and adapted to a wider range of interior styles. Whether it's an entrance, living or dining room, bedroom, or private workspace, PH artichokes create a bold, human atmosphere in a variety of locations.
"PH artichokes have been produced in a variety of metal materials for 60 years, and we are delighted to commemorate this organic form with a matte brass with earth-toned tones. Mark Holt states.
The PH artichoke, which hides the light source inside the 72 layers of blades, emits a soft light that is easy on the eyes without glare even when LED light is used as the light source. This brass version will be produced in all sizes (Φ480, Φ600, Φ720, Φ840).
The PH artichoke brass hairline finish will be available in October 2018.
Released in 60, the 2018th anniversary year, this version will be engraved with Henningsen's signature and the words "PH Artichoke - 1958-2018 - Anniversary Edition". From 2019 onwards, it will be sold without a commemorative stamp.
New version: PH 5 and PH 5 mini, combination of copper shade and white shade
Today, 60 years after its release, the PH 5 remains a bestseller among Louis Poulsen. To celebrate the pendant's return, Louis Poulsen is launching the PH 5 and PH 5 Mini, which combine copper and white shades. (The main shade and the mini shade built into the fixture are copper, polished, and unpainted.) The underside of the main shade and the upper side of the mini shade are painted white. )
The combination of copper and white emphasizes the design of Henningsen's shade system, while the mirror-like copper shade adds a new dynamism. This new version of the PH 5, which is already available in a variety of colors, gives you more choice in space.
The copper PH 5 and PH 5 Mini with their natural tones, which are the trend of today's interiors, create a warm and welcoming environment. The expression echoes Poul Henningsen's desire to create a light that brings warmth to people and spaces first and foremost.
Shaded in copper and white, the PH 5 and PH 5 Mini bring sculptural elegance to your living space when the lights are turned off. And when it is turned on, the soft, glare-free light shines even more with the copper material. Of course, even if it is used in one lamp or several, it retains its compact beauty.
Paired with copper and white shades, the PH 5 and PH 5 Mini will be available in October 2018.
About Poul Henningsen
Master of Light - Poul Henningsen is a multifaceted designer, architect, writer and cultural critic who has had a profound impact on Danish society and design. Lighting was his greatest passion and laid the foundation for the Louis Poulsen heritage.
Henningsen, who first saw electric lighting in 1907, devoted most of his life to improving it by working on lighting using electricity, which was still new at the time. His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1924. In 1926, he developed a revolutionary three-shade system that increased brightness while reducing glare. This is the birth of the "three-shade PH lamp" that diffuses bright and soft light that is easy on the eyes and makes the place of work and life more comfortable and cozy. In addition, the collaboration with Louis Poulsen has resulted in masterpieces such as PH 3, PH Artichoke and PH Snowball.
His pioneering work in exploring the interrelationships between the fundamentals of light, such as light, shadow, glare, and the reproduction of the colors of objects, and his insistence that both darkness and light are important, are the foundation of Louis Poulsen's lighting philosophy.
