Arne Jacobsen: The world-famous architect

The Danish architect and furniture designer Arne Jacobsen is widely admired as a pioneer in his craft. Jacobsen’s work lives beyond his 60-year career, illuminating cities and interior spaces with his revered ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ projects.

Master of architecture

Arne Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1902. Despite his family’s expectations, he studied at the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1924.

Graduating in 1927, Jacobsen began his first job as the City Architect of Copenhagen before opening his own studio. He then instilled modernism into Danish architecture with earlier works such as the Bellevue Theatre in 1936.

Jacobsen received multiple esteemed awards for his prominent designs, including the SAS Royal Hotel (1960), St Catherine’s College in Oxford, UK (1963), and the National Bank of Denmark (1971).

Timeless interiors

Arne Jacobsen is known for his dedication to creating complete works of art, earning this acclaim by designing buildings inside and out with total interior design.

Some of his most enduring interior fixtures were custom designed for his architectural projects.

For example, the world-renowned AJ Lamp and hemispherical AJ Royal pendant lamp were created for the SAS Royal Hotel in 1957, and these timeless lamps have been in production and selling worldwide ever since.

The AJ Oxford Table Lamp

Meanwhile, the opal-glass shade of the AJ Oxford Table Lamp brought warmth and light to student dining halls at St Catherine’s College. This lamp was relaunched by Louis Poulsen in 2023, updated with modern light sources, but true to the original design with three layers of mouth-blown glass.

Nature also greatly influenced the organic shapes of his other furniture designs, illustrated with his famous Egg and Swan chairs, whereas his buildings often took on strict, sleek, functionalist designs.
