Louis Poulsen based its original Toldbod 120 lamp on the philosophy that the simpler the design, the greater its flexibility. The new Toldbod 120 colour range is slated to push this concept even further with a subdued new colour palette of Black, White, Dark Rose, Light Grey, and Blue-Grey. The new hues lend the familiar form a fresh, modern look and feel. The compact, 120 mm-diameter pendants remain ideal for both individual and group installations, and will be introduced in February 2018.
The Toldbod 120’s new colour palette demonstrates the design’s ability to visually transform as it adapts to different aesthetics and spaces. Unlike the original Toldbod 120 designs, which featured bright exteriors and colour on the inside, the new Toldbod 120 variants draw from a subtle, elegant palette of Black, White, Dark Rose, Light Grey, and Blue-Grey, in line with the direction of contemporary interior décor. The new pendants feature a white interior.
“We developed the Toldbod with the vision of a very classic shape whose simple form would allow us to experiment almost infinitely with size and finish,” says Rasmus Markholt, Idea & Design Director at Louis Poulsen. “The new colour range offers new opportunities to get creative – and reimagine the impact that lighting can have on a room.”
The classic pendant hangs comfortably on its own – and works beautifully in multiples: both in a single hue or a mixed palette; in a row or in scattered, multi-height arrangements. This ability to work together was an essential consideration in developing the new colour suite: the Black, White, Dark Rose, Light Grey, and Blue-Grey options cover a wide range, yet belong to the same visual family, complementing and enhancing one another.
The pendant’s soft yet precise form makes it a natural fit for a variety of architectural styles and environments, from kitchens, dining and living rooms to hallways, offices and bedrooms. The discreet profile also makes the Toldbod 120 a natural complement to other light fittings.
“We wanted to offer our customers every opportunity to create a very individual layout, grouping various colour arrangements to really play up the desired atmosphere. A straight row of Toldbods is serious and structured. A multi-level, scattered arrangement becomes artistic and even more personal. The idea behind the design is to really make room for individual vision and self-expression in a given space.”
The Louis Poulsen design team developed the Toldbod 120 in 2009, basing the design on its predecessors, the Toldbod 290 from 1982, and the Toldbod 155 from 2006. The entire Toldbod family uses a sophisticated light reflector based on the PH Ellipse reflector: the last street light concept conceived by the legendary lighting designer Poul Henninsen, and one that has also proven excellent for interior use. The reflector ensures glare-free, uniformly distributed and diffused light, ideal for both focused task lighting and general room ambience. The Toldbod directs the majority of light downward, true to Henningsen’s philosophy of shaping light to brighten spaces while never shining directly into people’s eyes.
The Toldbod 120 pendant is made of cast aluminium, making it robust and durable. A powder-coated surface gives the pendant a soft, silk matt finish that also ensures easy maintenance. The pendant uses a G9 halogen bulb.
The new Black, White, Dark Rose, Light Grey, and Blue-Grey Toldbod 120 colours will be available in stores starting February 2018.
