On a summer weekend, more than 60,000 people walk along Jefferson Street in San Francisco’s famous Fisherman’s Wharf.
In recent years, the street has been transformed to make it more pedestrian-friendly, and when the City of San Francisco wanted to improve the lighting on the walkways, they chose Albertslund Maxi from Louis Poulsen.
To comply with California’s Title 24 energy-efficiency standards, the units for Jefferson Street needed to be supplied with photocells, so that they can dim up and down automatically in response to ambient light levels.
At the request of the City of San Francisco, a modified version of the fixture was supplied, with the photocell mounted on top, instead of in the usual position on the pole, to keep it out of view.
The result is an elegant and clean appearance that does justice to this famous location, and a highly efficient installation that makes sure light is only used where and when it is really needed.
