Many cultural institutions have a grandeur that is apparent from the very beginning of the visit. Lobbies and atriums are often expansive rooms that welcome guests in and make a lasting first impression. Create a statement with an impressive, sculptural pendant like the PH Artichoke or Enigma, or a cluster of pendants, that together resemble an art piece.
Outdoor lighting is a big part of the first impression of a building. When designing a cultural institution, consider how lighting guides the way to the main entrance, and contributes to the atmosphere you’re aiming to create.
Many museums are designed and built to house a collection of precious artefacts, and from time to time, when new museums are established, the architects seek to reflect the identity of the museum, in the building’s design. At the Oman Museum Across Ages, which is home to artefacts pertaining to the rich history of Oman, the building is inspired by the forms of the Hajar mountains which are a notable part of the country’s landscape.
As the audience take their seats to enjoy a concert or a show, the atmosphere of the room can prime them for what they’re about to experience. Create a lasting impression by considering not only the form of the room, the materials and acoustics, but also the illumination, which serves to create the desired ambience.
Tirpitz Museum is an architectural masterpiece, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). From the outside, it doesn’t appear particularly impressive, but when you enter, you discover the genius of the design. For this museum, Louis Poulsen collaborated with BIG on a lighting plan and a custom pendant, to provide the ideal lighting for the museum.
