A pioneer in the field of lighting design, Poul Henningsen shaped the Louis Poulsen story with the design of the famous PH 1958 chandelier in 5. Sixty years later, the PH 5 is still the company's best-selling product. In February 2018, to commemorate the birth of this timeless and iconic design, Louis Poulsen will unveil the dazzling and colorful PH 2 chandelier, which complements the recently launched PH 5 Mini collection.
In the fall of 2017, Louis Poulsen unveiled the new PH 5 Mini, the first resize of the PH 5 with classic white, a new modern white and six vibrant new color combinations: orange, rose, red, green, blue and gray.
To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the PH 5 chandelier, the original PH 5 will also be available in these eight identical colours, adding even more freedom of assembly to the PH <> series, especially when multiple chandeliers are hung together. The different shades of each lamp's five iconic shades create a dynamic gradient effect that enhances the visual impact of the chandelier.
Sculptural design for any space
The PH 5 is a delicate sculpture with the versatile Henningsen's usual balance of function and form (i.e. technical and artistic), whether lit or not. This effect is enhanced by bold new colors, each of which can be graded from dark to light and top to bottom.
"Every interior design, whether classic or contemporary, can benefit from the exceptional lighting and aesthetic quality that comes with Poul Henningsen's popular designs." "By expanding the PH 5 collection, we wanted to celebrate six decades of time, adding sparkle to all spaces while better interpreting their new, modern and exclusive expressiveness." These fixtures can be subtly combined with existing décor or presented with a bold pop of color. We're looking forward to seeing how people interpret new colors and how they can create the ideal atmosphere. ”
An ingenious system for creating pleasant light
Poul Henningsen developed the PH 1958 in 5, a follow-up to his well-known three-stage gradient system, which began in 1926 and led Louis Poulsen to become a leading manufacturer in the field of innovative lighting. Henningsen's original design was inspired by his mother's desire for a family that was still transitioning to the era of electric lighting and incandescent light bulbs, where the luminaire was more practical than aesthetic.
Later, when light bulbs became more standardized, a design shift that upset Henningsen, who called the new bulb a "muffin", he responded to this shift with a five-stage gradient system with full control over the new type of light, quipping, "With the new PH 5, I had to surrender to the bulb manufacturer." This capitulation proved to be more of a statement to the world about Henningsen's incredible talent, and to this day, the PH 5's five-stage gradient system is still active on the market, providing unobtrusive light for a variety of spaces, with most of the light distributed downwards throughout the space as a lighting fixture, rather than directly into the human eye. The chandelier uses a single bulb to achieve the ideal combination of downward and horizontal light, as well as to illuminate the luminaire itself. The internal anti-glare ring and reflectors ensure that the light always takes on a warm tone, complementing the daily shifts of natural light.
The new colorway will be available in stores starting in February 2018.
