In spring, Louis Poulsen will present the elegant and versatile new VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp in three colourways, perfect for creating ambience wherever you take it. As the name suggests, the lamp is based on the Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen’s poetic VL 45 Radiohus Pendant from the late 1930s.
Vilhelm Lauritzen's iconic VL 45 Radiohus Pendant Lamp is exquisite as a portable version with its quiet luxury look and feel, soft light and longevity. The lamp is created from the same shades and brass details as the pendant version. The only elements added are a brass base, together with a leather strap instead of a cord.
This is the first time a Vilhelm Lauritzen lamp has been designed for outdoor use. The rain-resistant VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp lets you enjoy a pleasant atmosphere in the garden or on the balcony well into the evening, with the light lasting approximately five hours.
Not only outdoors
Inside, the VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp complements other Vilhelm Lauritzen designs beautifully and is easy to carry from room to room for instant ambience and soft, non-glaring 360 degree illumination.
Just like the original Vilhelm Lauritzen pendant, the VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp enhances any space, making it ideal for living rooms, children's rooms and bedrooms. Yet, it's not only a perfect addition to home décor, but also great for creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in restaurants and hotels.
Go with Vilhelm Lauritzen
The VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp originates from the VL 45 Radiohus Pendant, created by Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen in the late 1930s for his renowned total artwork for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation headquarters, known in Danish as Radiohuset (the Radio House).
Lauritzen was a pioneer of Danish functionalism and is celebrated for his elegant modernist buildings and exceptional lamp designs, several of which have become design icons, valued for their ideal lighting and beautifully minimalistic expression.
Alongside other modernist architects of the mid 20th century, Vilhelm Lauritzen adhered to the principle of form follows function while also emphasizing aesthetics. This approach ensured that his lamps were not only practical and easy to handle but also visually appealing, both with the light on and off.
Choice of colours
The VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp is made of the highest quality materials and will be available in three colour variants. It is crafted from shiny, mouth-blown, multi-layered glass with a glossy white inside and brass details, featuring a hairline and lacquered finish that will not patinate over time. Additionally, it includes a premium genuine leather strap for easy carrying or hanging.
Choose the classic opal white version that corresponds with the original VL 45 Radiohus Pendant for soft, diffused lighting, or opt for the very pale rose variant, which, when turned on, adds a slight warm touch to the light. The yellow glass version provides a warmer glow, features aged brass details and comes with a darker leather strap. When turned on and off, the pale rose and yellow lamps transform exquisitely in light and colour.
Carry the lamp from room to room by the leather strap, hang it on a hook, place it on a windowsill, or wherever you would like to create a cosy and comfortable atmosphere. Try hanging it in the garden in a tree or placing it in a corner on your terrace or on the balcony table. No matter where you put it, you'll enjoy beautiful lighting and a warm ambience.
Discreet tech
The VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamp features discreet technology that enhances its usability, enabling you to dim the light in two ways by touching the brass part on top of the lamp. You can dim the light in steps, which is useful if you have multiple VL 45 Radiohus Portable Lamps and want to synchronize their brightness levels. Additionally, you can dim the light smoothly, letting you set the brightness manually. To switch between step dimming and stepless dimming, tap the lamp once to turn it off. Then, double tap and hold the second tap until the light blinks. Further instructions can be found in the manual.
Available soon
The new VL 45 Portable Lamp will be available from February 2025 at selected stores and louispoulsen.com
About Vilhelm Lauritzen
Vilhelm Lauritzen played a significant role in the history of Danish architecture. He was a pioneer of Danish functionalism and designed several notable buildings, including Nørrebro Theatre (1931-32), the department store Daells Varehus (1928-35), the headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation known as Radiohuset (1936-41) and the first airport terminal in Copenhagen (1937-39), as well as other significant works later on.
Lauritzen firmly believed that there is no life without aesthetics, and this philosophy is evident in all of his work, whether it be buildings or light fittings.
He also held the principle that architecture is applied art. He had a deep understanding of daylight and artificial light and always worked thoroughly with sculpting light and shade by placing windows in a building to fully benefit its users.
Vilhelm Lauritzen applied the same thoughtfulness and diligence to his lamp designs, combining direct illumination to create defined shadows with a milder, more diffuse light that softened and shaded spaces.
Lauritzen had a talent for creating a wonderfully pleasant atmosphere with light, which was evident in his work at Radiohuset. This was the first time he designed light fixtures specifically for a building while also designing it. From the mid 1940s until today, several of his extraordinary lamps have been available in the Louis Poulsen catalogues.
