"Why don't blind people who call themselves lighting engineers and others try to see the colors of natural light, when that's what brings true richness to light and life!" -Poul Hennningsen (1958)
Poul Henningsen was a pioneer in lighting design. Henningsen, one of the first designers to recognize the importance of shaping light, designed the PH 1925 pendant in 1926 as an extension of the three-shade PH lamp he completed between 3 and 1958. Based on a meticulous analysis of the reflection properties of light, Poul Henningsen's PH 5 pendant is considered a masterpiece of Danish design and is widely known for its groundbreaking glare-free construction and the beauty of the light it emits. In keeping with the spirit of Poul Henningsen, who always sought new value, Louis Poulsen is launching the PH 5 Mini, a smaller version of this classic that is effective for today's creative life.
Henningsen designed the PH 5 to accommodate incandescent bulbs, which were constantly changing in shape and size. No one could have predicted at the time that the PH 5 would be launched as a regular new product, and that it would become synonymous with Poul Henningsen's lighting in the future. No matter what light source you use, the PH 5 remains completely glare-free. With the PH 5, Henningsen also worked on improving the light color reproduction. Small shades of red and blue were inserted to complement the red and blue parts of the visible light spectrum, which are the least sensitive to the eye, and to suppress the light from yellow to green in the middle of the spectrum, which is the most sensitive. The new PH 5 Mini is available in a groundbreaking new colour, developed in collaboration with colour expert Louise Sasse. The darkest color is placed at the top, and the lighter tone becomes with each shade.
The name PH 5 comes from the diameter of the main shade (50 cm). Louis Poulsen is launching a mini version of the classic PH 5 with a main shade diameter of 30 cm. This mini will be released in the following 8 colors. Classic White (same color scheme as PH 5 Classic), Modern White, Blue Gradient, Red Gradient, Orange Gradient, Rose Gradient, Green Gradient and Gray Gradient.
The PH 5 Mini will go on sale in Japan in November 2017.
