Since 1874, Louis Poulsen has been shaping exceptional light through meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design. Rooted in Danish traditions, high-quality materials are used to create lighting that enhances spaces and elevates everyday experiences.
We believe the quality of materials directly impacts the quality of light. That’s why all lamps are produced using carefully selected, high-quality materials and are rigorously quality controlled at the production facility in Vejen, Denmark. Products are designed to withstand the test of time, with some even passed down through generations, a testament to the commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Developed by Poul Henningsen in the 1920s, the PH system uses a groundbreaking logarithmic spiral design to optimize light distribution. This system minimizes glare while enhancing functionality and aesthetics, with unique shade combinations like PH 3/2 or PH 6/5, offering tailored light diffusion. The numbers in the PH lamp represent a fraction of the diameter (in centimeters) in the top two shades, meaning the 3/2 is 30 centimeters across on top, and 20 centimeters across in the middle.
Made with mouth-blown opal glass from Italian artisans, the precision-engineered shades ensure consistent angles of light reflection, providing elegant and efficient illumination.
To spot a fake Poul Henningsen glass lamp, check for the Louis Poulsen logo, which fakes may either lack or poorly imitate. Genuine lamps have high-quality, mouth-blown glass with a smooth finish and substantial weight, while counterfeits use cheaper, lighter material. Compare the lamp’s proportions to official specs, as fakes may have slight discrepancies. Be wary of unusually low prices and generic packaging, as authentic lamps come with branded packaging and proper documentation.
Here are a few ways you can distinguish an authentic Louis Poulsen PH Artichoke fixture, one of the most counterfeited lighting pendants, from a replica:
The light source in a PH Artichoke is always shielded with the curvature of the individually placed leaflets. Whereas with counterfeits, the light source is always visible. Thus, every authentic fixture shields the light source within its form.
The distinctive shape and design of the pendant is glare-free, no matter what angle you’re viewing it from, giving the fixture its true organic form.
In every PH Artichoke, there are 72 leaves per fixture, all individually laser cut and satin polished.
The PH Artichoke is only available in these four diameters: 18”, 23”, 28”, and 33”. If you see another diameter offered, it is not an original.
Price points are the first indicators of an authentic PH Artichoke: if the price is lower than an authentic, the quality is too. Original ideas, quality materials, and excellent craftsmanship are an investment. As an investment piece becomes part of your legacy, an original can be handed down to following generations, while retaining its value.
