Silkeborg Municipality had previously used the Toldbod Bollard by Louis Poulsen along the harbour and wanted to continue to use this classic design in new urban spaces so that the old and new areas could co-exist in a coherent narrative. It was also important that the new lighting did not contribute to light pollution that would in any way disturb the otter. Light pollution arises when light is reflected on surfaces and produces illumination where it has no function, but on the contrary bothers humans and animals.

“The light was not in any way permitted to hit the surface of the water or disturb the circadian rhythm of the otter. We designed specialist optics that provided a focused and directed light with very little backlight and minimal glare. In this way, we were able to protect the otter’s needs while creating lighting that provided a safe environment down by the water. The area offers nightlife with many cafés and bars so people have to be able to walk along the paths without feeling that they are moving through a dark and sinister space,” says Søren Schnedler, Area Sales Manager, Outdoor at Louis Poulsen.
