Soon smaller spaces too will be able to revel in the poetic ambience, so well known from the soft and dynamic illumination of the Patera. In spring 2023, Louis Poulsen introduces Danish designer Øivind Slaatto’s modern take on the crystal chandelier in its smallest size yet, the Patera in Ø300.
The Patera is renowned for bathing its surroundings in a flattering, natural and uniform 360-degree light, no matter the size. The latest Patera in Ø300 fits perfectly in smaller spaces like a children's room, a bedroom, or any other smaller or low-ceilinged space, where it will enhance the ambience, just as with classic chandelier lighting.
What makes the Patera so unique, both in design and lighting properties, is its structure. Based on the Fibonacci sequence the pendant is a sphere of small glowing diamond-shaped cells. Each cell is designed to capture and reflect light, while also shielding it.
The brilliant mathematical structure makes the pendant glow, free of glare from every angle above 45 degrees, while providing direct light below for an ideal working light, depending on how the light is dimmed. At the same time, the design construction allows for a wonderful atmospheric light upwards, to illuminate the ceiling.
The new smaller size of the Patera is downscaled in a way that stays true to the original design. Slaatto recalculated the entire design, to ensure the exceptional indirect lighting that is characteristic of the Patera family. Additionally, the Patera in Ø300 is designed so that the structure holds itself, without the inner support frame that the larger sizes have.
“It was an extremely mathematical assignment. In fact, it’s the most complex light I have ever made. I think it has a certain kind of poetry to it. I hope people will feel inspired to move around it. I hope it generates life.” Øivind Slaatto
The Patera in Ø300 is assembled by hand, and no matter which angle it is viewed from, it appears truly captivating, regardless of whether the light is turned on or off. Yet, it never dominates a space. The smallest size looks alluring above a table for instance, or as an island of light in the corner of a space. It is also stunning in a row of two or more above a large table in a concept store or in a restaurant. Create a work of art with a cluster of Pateras of different sizes in a hotel lobby or in a living room.
The new size of the Patera is available in stores from spring 2023.
About Øivind Slaatto
Danish designer Øivind Slaatto holds a Master’s degree from the Danish Design School. Prior to this, he studied music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. An appreciation for music as well as nature thoroughly permeates his approach to the design process. Still, as recognized as he is for his poetic design solutions, he also seeks to transfer characteristics such as rationality, logic and harmony to his designs. Slaatto would like his designs to be perceived as simple and for light to be experienced in the same spirit of music being played. He has designed everything from speakers and cars, to furniture and light fixtures. Designing lighting, however, is a great passion for him. His natural affinity for light leads him to continually optimise the experience of light and ambience.
