Background: The Brown Meatpacking District in Copenhagen is steeped in history and is currently home to a mix of people comprising the socially vulnerable of Halmtorvet (Haymarket), college students, visitors to the Øksnehallen (Oxen Hall) trade fair centre, music school students and users of sports and cultural facilities.
The project uses a smaller edition of the traditional Copenhagen Lamp with its opal shade. The lamps are installed on facades and newly designed masts inspired by the cast iron columns found in the central building of Øksnehallen. They have been installed with historical accuracy, and linear lighting fixtures have been used under the eaves to flood the facades from above and below with a soft light. The historical streets of the Meatpacking District are beautiful, safe and well-lit thanks to Skot Wall which provides a sharper light when anyone approaches. This has been a conscious choice in order to prevent visitors from using dark corners as lavatories. The lighting solutions address the diversity that the area currently offers. They also create a safe environment and contribute to reducing anti-social behaviour. The project won the Danish Lighting Award in 2022.
